The Washington State Association of School Psychologists is one of four organizations that have come together in our advocacy efforts to work as a coalition of educational staff associates advocating for the needs of students in Washington State.

The coalition membership consists of School Psychologists, School Social Workers, School Counselors, and School Nurses representing their state professional associations. We provide a broad range of services, each with specializations unique to our training models; Social and Emotional Health and Wellness is one part of our comprehensive model.

As a result of the COVID 19 Pandemic and resulting school building closures, the ESA BHC wrote a Position Paper addressing The Importance of School Employed Behavioral Health Professionals in Supporting Students, Staff, Families and Communities During COVID 19.  Please use this resource and share it in your advocacy efforts and to inform your practice during this ongoing crisis.

Documents created by this group, linked below, outline Social and Emotional Health and Wellness Services we are trained to provide within a multi-tiered system of support (from tier 1 universal supports to tier 3 intensive supports) as outlined individually in our respective professional practice models, as well as what it is that each of us provides that is unique. These documents are a summary of existing models or practice, not a practice model in themselves.

Rather than present four different and complex professional practice models to those unfamiliar with our roles or sometimes even public schools in general, we formed these documents to unify our professions and roles into one easy to understand document. For example, we used the categories of academics, behavior, and career and college ready, which is language legislators are accustomed to hearing from school counselors, and we added health and wellness, due to our agreement as a coalition that mental health and wellness and social and emotional learning are an integral part of overall health and wellness.

These documents are exclusively outlining services, for this one facet of our respective service models. This is not an exhaustive list but serves as an overview to help stakeholders understand the complexity within each of these critical roles.

These documents were created to help others understand our different roles and strengths and attributes of different ESA student service providers. These roles can have overlap and the document is designed to merely highlight the predominant skill set a given profession provides, not be seen as an exhaustive list of skills and service that each professional is trained to provide.

These materials have been presented at various conferences, and will continue to be presented to various stakeholders. Presentations already done or scheduled include:
